National Secretary,
Chair KPA Scientific Committee

Greetings from Kenya Paediatric Association!

As we embark on a new decade and look forward to what the future holds, it is also a time to pause and reflect where we have come from. Most of us grew up in simpler times, perhaps stopping and rewinding the cassette tape 20 times to get the lyrics or spending endless hours playing outside. The threats to health seemed far removed and vaccines were making a remarkable impact.

Now our children grow up in a totally new environment. From instant entertainment and feedback in the palms of their hands that can keep them entranced for hours, to larger existential threats such as vaccine hesitancy, epidemics with pandemic potential and climate change. Looking at recent events even safety in schools is something that we can no longer take for granted.

The theme for this year’s conference will be ‘Promoting Child Development; Being a Voice for our Children’. In choosing this theme we are directing our education and research focus to capitalize on Kenya’s human resource potential. This involves advocating for early child development (the first 1000 days, from conception to age 3) and continuing to address the largely neglected adolescents. Today’s world with social media and its threats is not as simple as it was twenty years ago. Addressing the influence of social media and climate change are areas where paediatricians need current medical evidence and we must ask ourselves what can we do better. We are seeing more and more the impact the environment has on the health of our children.

Leading by example, KPA is taking multiple measures to reduce the conference’s carbon footprint demonstrating our commitment to care for our children by preserving the environment.

  1. Going Paperless: This year only the mini program will be available in hard copy. The main conference program will be made available in soft copy.
  2. Water: We will no longer be using single use plastic bottles. The hotel will either provide dispensers or glass bottles
  3. Transport: Where possible we encourage use of pooled transport to get to and from the conference venue
  4. Planting trees: KPA pledges to plant a tree for every conference participant. We will engage with the County Government to ensure this is carried out.

We invite you to partner with us to work towards making our conference green. Please take time to explore the beauty of Nakuru county. We wish you an engaging time at our ASC 2020.

Karibuni Sana…
